There is no universal stack count or recovery time that applies to every design. Taper, frame position, rim construction, handle projection and removable components all change the result. Why Laundry Basket Forms Need Their Own Nesting Test
Laundry baskets are often taller than shelf or countertop storage baskets. Their deeper walls increase the distance over which one unit enters another, so a small difference in taper or frame alignment can cause the upper basket to wedge before it reaches the intended nesting position.
Handles create another contact path. A high loop, side opening or outward projection may meet the rim below, while an inward-facing attachment can catch as the units are separated. A stack may appear compact while concentrating pressure on one handle connection or one section of the rim.
Lids and liners also change laundry basket export packaging. A lid may block the opening or receive pressure from the unit above, while loose liner fabric can become trapped between two walls. Ties, drawcords, labels and attachment points may create local pressure even when the basket bodies appear to fit.

Confirm the Nest Geometry Before Selecting a Carton
Begin outside the carton with a production-intent sample. Record the overall height, top opening, base footprint, rim profile, handle position and any internal fittings that could affect insertion. Use one agreed measurement method so that sample approval and later inspection results can be compared consistently.
Place a second basket into the first without twisting or forcing it into position. Identify the first contact point: the base may meet an inner wall, one rim may rest against another, or a handle may block further insertion. Distributed contact is different from pressure concentrated on one narrow area.
Measure the total stack height after each unit is added. The incremental height shows how much carton height each additional basket consumes and reveals when the units stop seating consistently. It is more useful than estimating the pack from the height of one basket.
Do not select a stack quantity simply because that number fits inside an available carton. Establish the highest stack that passes the product trial first; choose or confirm the carton after the stack geometry is understood.
A tall basket may appear to nest correctly until its raised handles meet the rim below. Adding another unit can reduce the visible stack height while transferring more pressure to the handle attachments. In that situation, the appropriate response is to test a revised orientation or a smaller stack—not to force the baskets lower.
The proposed arrangement should be revised when rims change profile, resistance increases with each added unit, handles move out of position or the stack begins to lean. Woven surfaces catching during insertion and several baskets lifting together during removal are also signs that the pack is too tight or poorly aligned.
Protect Rims, Handles, Lids and Liners
Once the basic geometry works, examine how each vulnerable component carries or transfers pressure. Mark the contact areas in photographs so that protection can be placed where it solves a demonstrated problem rather than surrounding the entire basket without a clear purpose.
A rim supporting nested units may flatten, abrade or lose symmetry. A handle trapped between two rims can prevent full insertion and concentrate pressure at its attachment point. The trial should document both the packed contact and the condition of these areas after separation.
Separators should be introduced only when they prevent an identified contact problem. Record their material, dimensions, position and orientation instead of using an instruction such as “add protective paper,” which leaves too much room for variation during production.
Give the Lid a Defined Packing Position
A lidded hamper needs its own pack-out decision. Depending on its construction, the lid may remain attached, rest inside the basket or require separate protection. The selected arrangement should avoid transferring pressure to the lid edge, attachment area or surrounding weave.
The method must also be repeatable. If the lid fits safely only when positioned at an unrecorded angle, production operators and receiving teams are unlikely to handle every unit consistently.
Keep the Liner Outside the Load Path
A removable liner should not be left loose between nested walls. Fabric, ties, seams and labels can increase insertion resistance, become trapped during separation or leave an uneven pressure line on the basket wall.
Specify whether the liner remains fitted, is removed and folded inside its basket, or is packed separately. Include a photograph of the approved fold and attachment position so the woven laundry basket packing method can be repeated without interpretation.

Run the Carton Trial With the Complete Pack-Out
After the dry stack passes, repeat the assessment inside the proposed carton. Use the intended basket construction, liners, lids, separators and protective materials. Testing an incomplete product and adding the accessories later does not verify the final pack.
Record the stack quantity, measured height, unit orientation, component positions and the space around and above the load. Photograph the carton before closure and note whether its flaps close normally. Bulging walls or a top rim held directly under closure pressure indicate that the arrangement needs revision.
The carton should control movement without forcing the product into another shape. Excess space may allow repeated rim and wall contact, while an overly tight pack can hold the same area under continuous pressure.
The holding period should be defined for the product and verification plan rather than copied from an unrelated basket. Record when the carton was closed and opened so later recovery observations have a clear starting point.
Unpack the Baskets and Observe Shape Recovery
Unpacking is part of the verification, not the end of the test. Nested laundry hampers should separate in a predictable order without pulling on handles, dragging rims across one another or lifting several units together.
Photograph the unopened carton, the stack after removal, every unit immediately after separation and the same identified units at the agreed observation checkpoints. Using the same products matters because group photographs cannot prove whether a particular unit recovered or was replaced.
Compare the unpacked baskets with the approved reference. Relevant checks may include overall height, opening dimensions, rim level, wall profile, base stability, handle position, lid fit, liner fit and visible pressure marks.

Approve the Pack-Out for the Individual SKU
The final approval should be attached to a named SKU and sample revision. A similar-looking laundry basket may have a different taper, frame, handle position, lid attachment or liner construction, so one test result should not automatically be extended across a collection.
Changes to dimensions, frame construction, rim treatment, handles, liners, lids, separators or carton size should trigger a review. Each variable can alter the nesting depth, load path or recovery result.
The final decision should fall into one of three clearly recorded outcomes:
Approve: The stack, carton and unpacked units meet every recorded criterion without unplanned handling.
Revise and retest: A lower stack, different orientation or targeted protection may correct an identified failure.
Reject nesting: Use another pack when controlled insertion, separation or recovery cannot be demonstrated.
Nesting is feasible only when the verified arrangement protects the finished product as well as it reduces occupied space. If the proposed stack cannot be built and separated consistently, or the baskets fail the agreed condition after unpacking, a lower quantity or non-nested pack is the more defensible purchasing decision.
